Palais de Justice

Neoclassical courthouse in Old Nice, the Palais de Justice anchors a lively square with cafés, markets, and elegant architecture from 1892.

The Palais de Justice of Nice stands as a striking example of late 19th-century civic architecture, anchoring the elegant Place du Palais in the heart of the Old Town. Completed in 1892 on the site of a former Dominican convent, the building was designed in a grand neoclassical style by architect Auguste-Vincent Dieudé-Defly. Its stately façade, with tall columns, stone pediments, and a sweeping staircase, reflects the ideals of order and authority, befitting its role as the city's main courthouse.

More than a seat of justice, the square around the Palais is a place of local life. By day, its open space fills with café terraces and occasional markets, including a charming book market held twice a month. At night, it glows softly under the city lights, offering a quiet yet majestic contrast to the livelier streets nearby. A short stroll from the Cours Saleya and the Cathédrale Sainte-Réparate, the Palais de Justice is not only a landmark of legal importance but also a graceful presence woven into the rhythm of daily life in Nice.
