Jardin du Palais Royal

The Jardins du Palais-Royal are one of Paris's most elegant and peaceful green spaces, a formal French garden in the heart of the First Arrondissement.

The magnificent gardens of the Palais Royal date back to the 1630s, when the Paris was first built and were originally designed by Pierre Desgots for Cardinal Richelieu They underwent a major transformation in the 1670s when Henrietta Anne, daughter of Charles I of England who married Louis XIV's brother, moved into the palace Following her death, in 1674 famed landscape architect André Le Nôtre redesigned the gardens the same Le Nôtre who designed the gardens at Versailles. The garden as we know it today dates back to the 1780s, when the Duke of Orléans built the surrounding galleries. The construction of those three collonaded buildings around the garden created the intimate, enclosed character that makes the gardens so special today.

The design is classic French formal style, with straight gravel pathways dividing the space geometrically, perfectly aligned rows of trees that are pleached and pruned into neat, uniform shapes and anicured lawns that are kept pristine. It also features flowerbeds with seasonal plantings, two circular fountains that add the soothing sound of water, and emblematic green metal chairs, the classic Parisian park chairs that you can move around to find your perfect spot in the sun or shade.
