If you haven’t already tried lángos, Hungary’s indulgent, fried dough specialty, then this is the place to do it
Szentendre is a charming little town found just outside of Budapest — perfect for a day trip from the capital. Serbians fleeing from the Turkish occupation settled here in the 17th century, giving the town its unique, almost Mediterranean character. Today few Serbians remain, but their influence persists.
Its picturesque setting, replete with preserved old houses and cobbled streets, has made it a favourite spot for Hungarian artists. Galleries are abundant, alongside churches, cafés and museums. Among them, the Open-Air Ethnographic museum is perhaps the most famous, featuring displays of traditional Hungarian rural architecture from different regions of the country, from the 18th to the 20th centuries.
Summer nights
The Szentendre Summer Festival runs every year from late June to late August. Head along for folk music, dancing and lots of theatre. The little town hums with energy at this time of year, but it can also get fairly crowded. If you want peace and quiet, winter is the time to go.
Sweet tooth
The Marzipan Museum is dedicated to two famous Hungarian confectioners: Mátyás Szamos and Károly Szabó. Learn about the art of marzipan making, and how they made some of their finest showpieces, such as a marzipan version of the Hungarian parliament building. If that’s not enough, try the Dobos Chocolate Museum, where you can sample József Dobos’ famous caramel topped, chocolate layered sponge cake — the Dobos torta.
