Buchetta del Vino

Florence’s wine windows, tiny Renaissance wall openings, once served wine directly to passersby even some still pour drinks today, a quirky city tradition.

In Florence, you’ll find something truly unique called a wine window (buchetta del vino). These are small, arched openings built into the walls of Renaissance palaces. Dating back to the 16th and 17th centuries, they were created so that noble families who produced wine could sell directly to the public without opening their grand doors.

A customer would knock on the little wooden shutter, hand over a flask or jug, and receive it filled with wine straight from the family’s cellar. Payment was passed back through the same window.

They became especially practical during times of plague, since they allowed people to buy wine with minimal contact, almost like an early form of social distancing. Many of these charming windows were sealed over time, but several have been reopened in recent years, and a few still serve wine, coffee, or gelato today, offering a quirky connection to Florence’s history.
