Testaccio

Located just south of the historic centre along the Tiber River, Testaccio is one of Rome's most fascinating & authentic neighbourhoods, famous for its food.

Testaccio is the 20th Rione (district) of Rome, a historic area slightly off the well-trodden tourist path that is known for its fantastic food scene. It developed as a working-class district in the late 19th and early 20th centuries, built around the city's former slaughterhouse (Mattatoio). The neighbourhood gets its name from the so-called "Monte Testaccio," an artificial hill made entirely of ancient Roman pottery shards (testae). This mound, which is 35 metres high and contains millions of broken amphorae that once held oil, wine, and other goods imported to ancient Rome, is a unique archaeological site that tells the story of the vast trade network operating in Rome over 2000 years ago.

Testaccio has evolved into a trendy area popular with both locals and visitors, but has managed to retain its unmistakably Roman character rooted in tradition. The former slaughterhouse complex has been transformed into cultural spaces, including contemporary art venues and event spaces. Testaccio is also considered the epitome of traditional Roman cuisine, with a strong culinary identity shaped by the slaughterhouse workers who were often paid partially in organ meats, leading to the development of dishes like coda alla vaccinara (oxtail stew) and pajata (pasta with calf intestines). Today, you'll find excellent traditional trattorias alongside modern restaurants, plus the vibrant Testaccio Market, which was established in the late 19th century before moving to a contemporary covered structure in 2012.
