Tequila Tasting

Tequila is an emblematic Mexican spirit made from the blue agave plant that typically comes from the state of Jalisco, including the eponymous city of Tequila.

Tequila is Mexico's most famous beverage, as well as a powerful symbol of Mexican heritage and pride. It is has been distilled using traditional methods for hundreds of years and, unlike most spirits, it is made from a single plant: blue Weber agave (Agave tequilana). Agave is indigenous to Mexico and typically takes 6 to 10 years to mature. For Tequila production, the core of the agave, known as the piña, (pineapple) is roasted and fermented, and this creates a flavour profile that is earthy, herbal and slightly sweet. Tequila has Denomination of Origin status (like Champagne or Parmigiano-Reggiano), meaning it can only be produced in specific regions of Mexico, mainly in the state of Jalisco, and a few other areas.

True tequila—especially high-quality, 100% agave tequila—is meant to be sipped slowly, often at room temperature, to appreciate its nuanced flavours and aroma. It's a gastronomic experience, much like wine or single malt whiskey. As such, doing a tequila tasting on a visit to Mexico is a very worthwhile experience, helping you learn to appreciate the different elements of the iconic drink and giving you access to varieties you won't find elsewhere.
