En route from Marrakech to the Ourika Valley the temperature can drop as much as 15 degrees, so it might be worth bringing some extra layers!
The heat and intensity of Marrakech can be wonderful, but it can be oppressive too. When you need an escape, the Ourika Valley is a perfect option just 45 minutes away by car. Young Marrakshis know all about it: on weekends they buzz out of the capital on their mopeds and picnic by the streams and waterfalls near Setti Fatma. Between February and April the almond and cherry orchards are in bloom, and the nature is riotously lively.
Setti Fatma is renowned for its annual summer moussem, the seven waterfalls that surround it and its gnarled, 100-year-old walnut trees. There’s a small weekly market where you can buy local produce, and also numerous riverside tagine outlets to enjoy. (Try to) Enjoy the precarious, wobbling temporary bridges that take you across the river!
Beyond Setti Fatma is where Ourika Valley really begins. A mule track takes you up into the valley, passing Tacheddirt and Oukaïmeden - ‘the meeting place of the four winds’ - where you can find not only the best skiing in Morocco but some fascinating prehistoric rock carvings. Eventually the path will take you to the charming mountain village of Imlil, whence the intrepid can take the two day trek to the 4,167m peak of Toubkal.
