Around 60km from Madrid, the Guadarrama National Park covers an area of almost 34,000 hectares, making it the 5th largest in Spain. Named after the Sierra de Guadarrama mountain range, key features of the park include rugged peaks such as Peñalara (the highest in the Madrid region), glacial lakes, expansive forests of Scots pine and oak, and meadows full of wildflowers. The park enjoys a rich biodiversity, hosting hundreds of species of wildlife including Spanish ibex, Imperial eagles, Griffon vultures, wolves and wild boar. The area is also steeped in history, with ancient castles, monasteries, and charming villages scattered throughout.

Guardarrama National Park is a popular destination for day-trippers from Madrid, with plenty of hiking trails, bike paths and even opportunities for skiing and snowboarding in the wintertime.

Your day will begin at your accommodation in the centre of Madrid, where you will get acquainted with your driver-guide and head north towards the beautiful Sierra de Guadarrama mountain range. Our first stop will be the town of Manzanares el Real, nestled at the foot of the mountains and renowned for its hiking trails and its impressive medieval fortress, the Castillo de Manzanares. After a pleasant walk through town, you will have the opportunity to step back in time as you see the exterior of this well-preserved castle dating over 500 years old. 

Following your visit to Manzanares el Real, your guide will begin your journey into the mountains with a stroll out to La Pedriza, a striking natural area within the Sierra de Guadarrama National Park. From here you will set off on a guided hike through the area, known for its unique rock formations, rugged landscapes, and rich biodiversity. As you admire its gorgeous landscapes adorned with distinctive granite cliffs and boulders, you will soon see why it is a cherished destination for hikers, climbers, and nature enthusiasts.
