Burford

Nicknamed the "Gateway to the Cotswolds," Burford is a beautiful and historic town in Oxfordshire, perched on a hillside sloping down to the River Windrush.

Located in Oxfordshire along the River Windrush, Burford is one of the most charming and historically significant towns in the Cotswolds. The town is best known for its iconic High Street, which sweeps downhill toward the river, lined with beautiful medieval and Tudor buildings made from the distinctive honey-colored Cotswold limestone. The street presents a stunning visual with its gentle slope and historic architecture on either side and is arguably one of the most beautiful streets in England.

The town has a rich history dating back to the Saxon period and was an important wool trading centre in medieval times. One of the best known landmarks is the church of St. John the Baptist which dates from the 15th century and features impressive architecture and medieval brasses. Burford retains much of its original character and has avoided excessive commercialisation compared to some other Cotswold towns. The combination of historical architecture, picturesque setting, and authentic atmosphere makes it a beloved stop for visitors exploring the region.
