Pall Mall

Pall Mall is one of London’s most historic and prestigious streets, steeped in aristocratic heritage, gentlemen’s clubs, and British tradition.

Believe it or not, Pall Mall is named after a game similar to croquet, as King Charles II and his court used this street as an alley to play the game in the 17th Century. The area subsequently developed as a fashionable residential district for the aristocracy, and many grand townhouses were built here, though most have since been replaced by clubs and institutions. In fact, Pall Mall has long been synonymous with London’s most exclusive gentlemen’s clubs, many of which were founded in the 18th and 19th centuries. These clubs were (and often still are) the haunts of politicians, aristocrats, and intellectuals. Notable clubs include the Athenaeum, The Travellers Club and the Reform Club.

Unsurprisingly, Pall Mall has long been a centre for political intrigue, literary salons, and high society. It was a place where deals were made, gossip was exchanged, and the future of the British Empire was debated. The street is also home to auction houses like Sotheby’s, which was located at 34-35 Pall Mall before moving to Bond Street.
