All Souls College

Founded in 1438, All Souls does not take undergraduate students. In fact, it's so exclusive, one must be invited to apply for a place at the college.

All Souls College is one of the most distinctive and exclusive colleges at the University of Oxford. Founded in 1438 by King Henry VI and Henry Chichele, the Archbishop of Canterbury, it was originally established as a community of scholars to pray for those who had died in the Hundred Years’ War. Unlike other colleges at Oxford, All Souls does not admit undergraduate students; instead, it is primarily a research institution composed of fellows, many of whom are leading figures in the humanities and social sciences.

The college is renowned for its academic prestige and its famously difficult fellowship exam, particularly the now-discontinued "one-word essay" paper that once asked candidates to write on a single word such as "innocence" or "miracles." Those who pass the rigorous selection process become fellows, gaining access to generous research support and one of the most beautiful and serene environments in Oxford.

Architecturally, All Souls is notable for its stunning twin towers designed by Nicholas Hawksmoor and its peaceful quadrangles that offer a tranquil contrast to the busy streets outside. Although closed to the public for most of the year, the college opens its gates on certain days, offering a rare glimpse into a world of quiet scholarship and tradition. All Souls remains an emblem of Oxford’s intellectual elite and a symbol of enduring academic excellence.
