Christ Church Meadow

Christ Church Meadow is one of Oxford's most beloved green spaces, a sizeable area of water meadows and parkland that belongs to Christ Church College.

Christ Church Meadow is a large, picturesque meadow in Oxford, England, and is one of the city's most famous green spaces. It is located adjacent to Christ Church, one of the largest and most well-known colleges of the University of Oxford. The meadow is bordered by the River Thames (which is known locally as the Isis) and the River Cherwell, making it a scenic and tranquil area popular with locals and tourists alike. The meadow is crisscrossed by several walking paths, and the rivers provide opportunities for punting, a popular activity in Oxford where a flat-bottomed boat is propelled using a pole. It is also a working flood meadow where cattle still graze during certain seasons, maintaining the traditional landscape that has existed for hundreds of years.

Christ Church Meadow has been part of the landscape of Oxford for centuries and is closely associated with the history of Christ Church College, which was founded in 1546 by King Henry VIII. It also has a connection to Lewis Carroll who studied Mathematics at Christ Church. While there, he was befriended by the college gardener's daughter, Alice and the gardens and college would later become central to his novels Alice in Wonderland and Alice Through the Looking Glass.
