Chicago Theatre

The Chicago Theatre is a French Baroque style auditorium and one of the city's most prestigious performance venues for music and comedy, dating back to 1921.

Originally known as the “Wonder Theatre of the World,” the Chicago Theatre is one of the city's most beloved and historic landmarks. It was the first large, lavish movie palace in the U.S., setting the standard for theatres across the country. Designed by Chicago-based architects Rapp & Rapp, the building’s exterior features a majestic miniature replica of the Arc de Triomphe, with intricate stonework and a grand arched window. Inside, the theatre boasts a 7-story lobby modelled after Versailles, a sweeping staircase, and a massive crystal chandelier. The theatre's most recognisable feature is its massive vertical "CHICAGO" sign and marquee on State Street. This sign has become one of the most photographed landmarks in Chicago and serves as an unofficial symbol of the city. The marquee stretches across the width of the building and displays the names of current performers.

When it opened, The Chicago Theatre was considered the flagship of the Balaban and Katz theater chain and set the standard for "movie palaces" across the country. During its early decades, it primarily showed films but also featured live vaudeville acts and big band performances. Whilst it did fall into decline by the 1970s, it underwent major renovations in the 1980s to restore its original grandeur. Today, the Chicago Theatre is a premier performance venue hosting live music stand-up comedy stage productions and special speaking events and broadcasts.
