The Liberty Bell is most closely associated with the American Revolution and the abolitionist movement. It was not originally called the “Liberty Bell”, this name was popularised by abolitionists in the 1830s, who adopted it as a symbol of the anti-slavery movement. Since then, it has evolved into an enduring national symbol of independence, Civil Rights, and freedom and justice for all. The bell has a long and fascinating history, originally commissioned in 1751 by the Pennsylvania Provincial Assembly. It was cast in London by the Whitechapel Bell Foundry and then shipped to Philadelphia. It is made of 70% copper, 25% tin, with small amounts of lead, zinc, arsenic, gold, and silver and weighs over 2000 pounds. Its most prominent features are an inscription quoting Leviticus, "Proclaim LIBERTY Throughout all the Land unto all the Inhabitants Thereof", and of course, the famous crack, which is almost 25 inches long and makes the bell instantly recognisable. The crack is thought to have developed gradually across the 19th Century, expanding significantly when it was rung for George Washington's birthday in 1846. After several failed repair attempts, the bell was deemed unringable, although it has been symbolically tapped on certain special occasions over the years.
The Liberty Bell travelled across the country for exhibitions between 1885 and 1915, and is now permanently housed within the Liberty Bell Center in Independence National Historical Park in Philadelphia. The Liberty Bell Center features exhibits about the bell’s history, its role in American movements for freedom and its symbolic importance around the world. The bell is positioned so it can be viewed from outside the building at any time, day or night.
