The Château de Chantilly is a historic monument in Northern France that is well worth a day trip from Paris. Located just outside the town of Chantilly, the site has a complex history spanning hundreds of years. Whilst the original medieval fortress was constructed in the 14th century, the structure we see today is largely the result of various reconstructions and additions made over time. The most significant rebuilding occurred in the 19th century with the reconstruction of the Grand Château in a neo-Renaissance style after the original had been demolished during the French Revolution.
The château is renowned for the Musée Condé, a wonderful collection of paintings, manuscripts and decorative arts including works by Raphael and Botticelli. The estate also features opulent French formal gardens designed by the famous landscape architect André LeNôtre, who also created the gardens at Versailles, as well as les Grandes Écuries (Great Stables), one of the most impressive equestrian centres in the world. Built in the 18th century, they are now home to the Living Museum of the Horse, which offers shows and exhibitions on the history and art of horsemanship.
