The Amalfi Coast (Costiera Amalfitana) is one of Italy’s most iconic destinations, a UNESCO World Heritage Site renowned for its dramatic cliffs, colourful villages, turquoise waters, and lush landscapes. Stretching along the southern side of the Sorrento Peninsula in the Campania region, it has a long history, stunning scenery and a reputation for luxury and "la Dolce Vita". Inhabited for thousands of years, the area grew to prominence under the Republic of Amalfi (9th–12th centuries), one of Italy’s four maritime republics. During this time, it became an important hub for trade with the Middle East, introducing paper, citrus fruits, and spices to Europe.
Notable towns along the Amalfi Coast include Amalfi, once the centre of the maritime republic, Positano, a glamorous town with colourful houses dotted along the cliffside and Ravello, an enclave perched high above the Tyrrhenian Sea with panoramic views of the whole coastline.
