Picture-perfect Positano is perhaps the most iconic town on the Amalfi coast. Its location is simply breathtaking, the town cascades dramatically down steep cliffs toward the Tyrrhenian Sea in a tumble of pastel-coloured houses stacked vertically on the mountainside. At the bottom of all those steps and winding paths is the main beach, Spiaggia Grande, with its characteristic volcanic dark sand, colourful umbrellas and beach chairs. Nearby, the Church of Santa Maria Assunta sits at the heart of the town, crowned by its iconic majolica-tiled dome. Around it, life spills into the piazzas and along the beachfront, where cafés buzz with people lingering over spritzes and seafood.
Positano has a reputation as a chic, fashionable destination and is particularly known for the "Moda Positano" style of clothing. The town is filled with boutiques selling linen dresses, handmade sandals, resort wear, and artisan goods, and the handmade leather sandals are especially famous. Beyond fashion and scenery, Positano has been a celebrity hideaway and jet-set destination since the 1950s when it caught the attention of artists and intellectuals like John Steinbeck, who famously called it "a dream place that isn't quite real". It has become intextricably associated with Italian glamour, leisure, and "la dolce vita" lifestyle and wandering along its colourful, winding streets, it is easy to see why.
