Dão Wine Region

The Dão wine region is one of Portugal’s most historic and prestigious winemaking areas, often regarded as the birthplace of some of the country’s finest wines.

The Região Demarcada do Dão is a lesser-known wine region located in north-central Portugal, just south of the famous Douro Valley. It is surrounded by several granite mountain ranges, including the Serra Estrela the highest range in mainland Portugal, and this rugged landscape provides natural shelter from harsh weather, thus creating an ideal microclimate for viticulture. The warm, dry summers followed by cool, wet winters allow the grapes to ripen slowly and develop complex aromas while maintaining excellent acidity.

The soils of the Dão region are primarily granite-based, which lends a certain freshness and minerality to the wines. Vineyards are often planted on gentle slopes at relatively high altitudes, which contributes to the elegance and balance typical of Dão wines. Wines of the Dão are known for their refinement and ageing potential. Around 80% of wines produced there are reds, which tend to be structured yet graceful, with firm tannins, fresh acidity, and flavours of dark berries, forest floor, and spice. In fact, the style of wine produced has led wine aficionados to dub the Dão region Portugal's answer to Burgundy.
