Santa Clara-a-Nova Monastery

Located just outside Coimbra in Portugal, Santa Clara-a-Nova Monastery is a significant religious monument with a fascinating history spanning centuries.

The Monastery of Santa Clara-a-Nova, or 'New' Santa Clara Monastery was built back in the 17th century to replace the original Monastery of Santa Clara-a-Velha, (or 'Old Santa Clara Monastery) which had been repeatedly flooded by the Mondego River. The new site, built on higher ground, was created to honour Queen Saint Isabel, one of Portugal’s most venerated royal figures. The wife of King Dinis of Portugal, she founded the original monastery in the 14th century and later became a Franciscan nun there after her husband’s death. She was canonised in 1625, and her relics were moved to the high altar of Santa Clara-a-Nova once the new monastery was completed.

The monastery is a blend of Mannerist and Baroque styles, with a sober yet elegant stone façade and a richly decorated interior. Highlights include the main altarpiece, an elaborate gilded Baroque materpiece, the beautiful series of Azulejo tiles lining the walls, and the choir stalls, which are made of jacaranda wood and known for their intricate workmanship. Today, Santa Clara-a-Nova functions as a museum and monument rather than an active monastery. It offers visitors remarkable views of Coimbra while providing insight into Portugal's religious heritage and the story of Queen Saint Isabel.
