Guimarães

Guimarães is a historic city in northern Portugal, known as the "Birthplace of Portugal", where key events that led to the country's foundation took place.

A UNESCO World Heritage Site since 2001, Guimarães is a small city in the Minho province of northern Portugal, approximately 50 km from Porto and 20 km from Braga. The birthplace of the first Portuguese king Afonso Henriques, it played a pivotal role in the development of the nation of Portugal as we know it today. It was the site of the legendary Battle of São Mamede in 1128, an event which led to Portuguese independence. The city is known for its beautifully preserved medieval urban layout, replete with narrow cobblestone streets, granite houses with wooden balconies, quaint squares, and well-preserved façades giving it an almost storybook charm. Its compact historic centre can be explored on foot, with numerous medieval buildings, squares, and monuments telling the story of Portugal's origins.

Landmarks such as Largo da Oliveira and Praça de Santiago reflect Guimarães's deep religious and civic roots, and no visit to the city would be complete without a stop at Guimarães Castle, a robust medieval fortress believed to be where King Afonso Henriques was born. The nearby Palace of the Dukes of Braganza, a 15th-century noble residence that combines Gothic and early Renaissance architectural styles, rich furnishings and historic artefacts, and the city also boasts modern cafes and cultural venues that are a testament to its youthful and creative energy.
