Sanctuary of Bom Jesus do Monte

Bom Jesus do Monte is a stunning religious sanctuary near Braga, reached via an elaborate baroque staircase lined with chapels depicting the Passion of Christ.

Bom Jesus do Monte (Good Jesus of the Mount) is one of Portugal's most impressive religious sanctuaries and a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Located just outside of the city of Braga in the Minho Region of Northern Portugal, it was built primarily in the 18th century, though the site has religious significance dating back earlier. Sitting upon a hilltop, it can be reached by an elaborate Baroque staircase composed of 577 steps, with the zigzagging stairways creating a powerful visual effect when viewed from below. The stairway represents the Via Sacra (Sacred Way), with chapels depicting the Passion of Christ, and also includes ornate thematic fountains representing the Five Wounds of Christ and the Five Senses.

The neoclassical church at the top was completed in 1834 and features twin bell towers and an impressive interior with gilded woodwork. It is a major pilgrimage site, especially during Holy Week and religious festivals, and the church houses religious art and offerings from pilgrims. In addition to the famous stairway, it is possible to reach the top via a historic water-powered funicular built in 1882. Visitors can also enjoy the beautiful gardens and panoramic views over the city of Braga and the Minho region.
