Founded in 1891 by Artur Hazelius, a distinguished Swedish scholar, teacher and folklorist, Skansen is the world's first open-air museum and one of Stockholm's most popular attractions. It consists of historical buildings and homesteads from all over Sweden that have been disassembled, transported, and reconstructed on site, a living history museum where staff dressed in period clothing demonstrate traditional crafts and activities and even a zoo, featuring Nordic wildlife such as wolves, bears, lynx, wolverines, moose, and reindeer
The museum spans about 75 acres (30 hectares) and showcases around 150 historic buildings from different regions of Sweden, dating from the 18th to the early 20th century. These include farmsteads, a bakery, a glassworks, a pottery, a shoemaker's workshop, and even a full wooden church. One of Skansen's core missions is to preserve and showcase Swedish cultural heritage and traditions before industrialization changed rural life. It's particularly known for its seasonal celebrations and events that keep Swedish folk traditions alive such as Midsummer and festive Christmas markets.
