Built in the 1890s to emulate the US Capitol building in Washington DC, the Colorado State Capitol was designed by celebrated architect Elijah E. Myers. It makes use of raw materials from the surrounding landscape with a facade made Colorado white granite, and floors and interior walls lined with rare Colorado rose onyx. The most emblematic feature of the building is of course its vast golden dome, standing over 250 feet tall and originally gilded with gold from the nearby Cripple Creek mines, a nod to the Colorado gold rush. Inside, it also contains rotunda murals that depict key moments in Colorado's history, and stained glass windows honouring important figures in Colorado’s development.
Located at the east end of Denver's Civic Center Park, Colorado State Capitol sits at the intersection of Colfax Avenue and Broadway, exactly 1 mile above sea level. It i surrounded by beautifully landscaped grounds with memorials and statues. In addition to a historical monument, it still serves as a working government building, hosting the Colorado General Assembly and housing the Governor's office in the West Wing.
