US Mint, Denver

The U.S. Mint in Denver is one of only four active coin-producing mints in the country, offering a glimpse into the history and production of American currency.

Located just a few blocks from the Colorado State Capitol, the Denver Mint was established in 1906, though its origins can be traced back to the gold rush. In the 1860s, a private assay office was created to weigh and value the gold being mined from the Colorado Rockies. Then, as the demand for a formal mint grew, the federal government built the current facility to strike official U.S. coins. Today, it’s one of the largest producers of coins in the world and still strikes circulating coins, coin dies, and commemorative coinage. The Denver Mint produces billions of coins each year, and has been featured in various heist films and documentaries about American currency.

The building itself is an elegant Renaissance Revival-style structure made of Colorado granite, and even from the outside, it is well worth a stop for photos. It is sometimes possible to join free guided tours that offer a behind the scenes look at the history of coinage in the US and the coin production process. Even if tours aren’t available, there is also a gift shop stocked with collectibles, coin sets, and historical memorabilia.
