Amalfi

Amalfi is the largest town on the Amalfi Coast, once the centre of the Amalfi Maritime Republic, a powerful independent state from the 9th to the 12th century.

The historic and geographic heart of the Amalfi Coast, the town of Amalfi, has a long history and was once a major maritime power and one of the most important cities in medieval Italy. From the 9th to 12th centuries, Amalfi was one of the four great Maritime Republics (along with Venice, Genoa, and Pisa) that dominated Mediterranean trade. At its height, Amalfi had a population of around 70,000 people and controlled trade routes throughout the Mediterranean. The city had its own navy, minted its own coins, and established trading posts across the region.

The town's most famous landmark is the stunning Cathedral of St. Andrew (Sant'Andrea), which dominates the main piazza. The cathedral is a spectacular mix of architectural styles, including Arab-Norman, Byzantine, Gothic, and Baroque, reflecting Amalfi's historical connections across the Mediterranean. The façade features a striking geometric pattern of different coloured stones and a dramatic flight of stairs leading up to it.
