Anacapri

Anacapri is a municipality on the island of Capri, close to the Blue Grotto, known for its scenic views and more relaxed atmosphere compared to Capri town.

Anacapri lies on the Western side of Capri Island, around 150 metres (or 490 feet) above Capri Town. In fact, its name comes from the Ancient Greek prefix 'ana', which means 'up' or 'above'. It is notably quieter and more relaxed than its neighbour below, surrounded by lemon groves, vegetable gardens, and vineyards. The pace is slower, prices are generally lower, and there are fewer designer boutiques and more local shops, family-run restaurants and artisan workshops.

One of Anacapri's main attractions is the chairlift (seggiovia) that takes you up to Monte Solaro, the highest point on the island at 589 meters. At the top, there are panoramic views encompassing the entire Bay of Naples, the Amalfi Coast, the Sorrentine Peninsula, Mount Vesuvius, and the famous Faraglioni rock formations. On clear days, you can see all the way to the mountains of Calabria. Anacapri is also home to the neoclassical Church of San Michele, and the nearby Villa San Michele, a beautiful villa and gardens built on the ruins of a Roman villa that belonged to the Emperor Tiberius. It was the home of Swedish physician and author Axel Munthe in the late 19th/early 20th century and contains his impressive collection of Roman antiquities, furniture, and art.
