Vinho Verde Wine Region

The Vinho Verde (green wine) region in Northwest Portugal is known for its unique style of wines that are exceptionally crisp, refreshing and light-bodied.

Vinho Verde is a designated wine-producing area in the Minho region in northern Portugal. The name Vinho Verde literally translates to "green wine," but this refers to its youth rather than its colour, since these wines are typically consumed within a year of bottling, when they're fresh and vibrant. The wines are known for being light-bodied with low alcohol (usually 9-11%), and refreshingly acidic, often displaying citrus, green apple, and sometimes peach notes. Some varieties of green wine are also slightly effervescent. This hint of fizz traditionally came from residual fermentation of trapped Carbon Dioxide when the wine was bottled, but nowadays, most producers deliberately inject a small amount of CO₂ before bottling to recreate the traditional feel and give the wine its signature lift.

The Vinho Verde demarcated wine region (DOC) covers about 21,000 hectares of vineyards in the northwestern corner of Portugal, making it one of Portugal's largest wine regions. It is also one of the most popular: Vinho Verde is the 2nd most exported Portuguese wine after Port. Minho's cool, rainy climate and granite soils create perfect conditions for these extraordinary wines. The Vinho Verde DOC is divided into nine sub-regions, each with slight variations in microclimate and soil composition. The northernmost sub-regions, particularly Monção e Melgaço, are known for producing some of the highest quality wines in the denomination. Whilst the white wines from the Vinho Verde region are by far the most internationally recognised and exported, Red and Rosé varieties are also available. Vinho Verde is produced by a mix of large historic wine estates (quintas) and modern cooperatives. Traditional viticulture in the region involves vines grown on tall pergolas or trained up trees, posts, or trellises with plants raised high off the ground to prevent mildew in the humid climate. Vinho Verde wine tourism is a growing and richly rewarding experience, offering a combination of beautiful vineyard landscapes, historic estates, gastronomy, and, of course, delightful wines.
